Here in British Columbia, hedges grow beautifully and offer plenty of privacy! Whether you’re designing a new yard for your house or you’re looking to refresh your current look, hedges are a beautiful accent that will surely raise the aesthetic and property value of your home. But it can also be challenging to maintain and care for them.  The only way to maintain the aesthetic and health of your hedges is routine hedge trimming.

Just like your own body, your grass requires nutrients, water & air. Depending on the type of grass in your lawn & the region you live in, different ratios of these nutrients are required. Here in British Columbia, we definitely get our fair share of rain but this is only one of the essential elements your lawn needs. When the summer heat comes & the soil begins to dry out, if your lawn hasn’t been fed the nutrients it needs, it might not survive.

Our focus will be to remove any new weeds, turn over the soil to allow more air & nutrients to reach the plants, & raking or blowing out any dead or decaying debris that has fallen onto the soil. Who doesn’t want to look outside their window at a beautiful, evenly cut lawn with freshly lai stripes, clean edges, & a clear driveway? Mowing your lawn regularly keeps your property looking clean, tidy, and well-maintained & welcoming. Without regular maintenance, your grass can become uneven & inconsistent. Some areas might grow stronger and faster while others become thin and sparse, and this disparity will only worsen the longer you leave your grass without proper care.

Heavy rains can lead to soil compaction as the pooling of water compresses the soil. Core aeration, the most common type, uses a machine that removes cylindrical chunks of soil from your lawn that are several inches deep. By penetrating through and perforating your lawn, you’re allowing the roots of your grass to get better access to the essentials like air, water, & nutrients. Not only will this give your grass better access to what it needs, but by removing cores, it also helps uncompact soil as it fills itself out over time. Aeration can also help with thatch & is a helpful first step if your thatch problem is out of control. It will penetrate through the thatch which will remove some of it & open it up to allow nutrients to hit your lawns roots.

Power rake uses rotating blades that more aggressively rip up the deeper layers of thatch & more importantly for our concerns, moss. A power rake is not designed to get 100% of the moss, attempting to remove all the moss is ill-advised & will most likely leave your lawn almost entirely stripped & bare. The key here is to get rid of as much moss without damaging your lawn beyond repair. Because these blades go deeper than a dethatching machine would go, it is able to lift up more of the moss from your lawn.  it’s a delicate balance because the rainforest climate brings heavy rains that helps to grow thick layers of moss. However, this is the catch. If you go too deep, you’re also going to tear up the living root systems of your turf and this will be very hard to repair, requiring substantial overseeding. Another problem is that if your moss is very thick, there might not even be grass growing underneath.

Regular pruning improves your plant or tree’s overall health, by removing dead or dying organic matter, you leave trees less susceptible to developing diseases from rot. Not only does pruning help remove dead, rotting or overgrown branches, it also helps allow sunshine to reach the core system of the tree by thinning the density of foliage & branches, allowing for more essential resources to strengthen the plant.

Pressure washing, or power washing, is something that we would recommend doing for your home at least once a year, without frequent pressure washing, the buildup of dirt, dust or grime can become too much for a single pressure wash, or to clean at all. So to prevent non-removable grime, you should make this a part of your home care checklist. We will pressure wash any areas you ask us to.
